Traduire Maryse Conde: entretien avec Richard Philcox

Article Abstract:

Maryse Conde chose her husband, Richard Philcox, to translate her work into English and this interview with him focuses on the importance of gender and race in her work. He does not agree with his wife that a translation is a totally different work from the original. As a translator, he does not believe that the books should be geographically displaced so he uses English expressions from the Antilles where the books take place. The text of the interview is in French.

Entretien avec Maryse Conde: de l'identite culturelle

Article Abstract:

Maryse Conde is an author from Guadeloupe who has lived in New York for the past several years, as a professor at Columbia University since 1995. She believes that cultural conceptions are being transformed rapidly by the population movements that have been taking place. In New York, she has come into contact with Caribbean people who speak a variety of languages, demonstrating that identity is not fundamentally defined by language or by race.
