Universal jurisdiction and universal human rights: a global progression

Article Abstract:

International law has largely been a set of norms and legal statutes that little power over internal state affairs. However, the proliferation of atrocities and oppression in many states has forced the international community, represented by the UN, to extend the jurisdictional boundaries of international law. Under present interpretation of international law, all states have the authority to adjudicate in human rights violations such as genocide, torture, hostage-taking, piracy, slave trading, apartheid, hijacking, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Disaster or release? J.S. Furnivall and the bankruptcy of Burma

Article Abstract:

J.S. Furnivall, foreign analyst of Burma's political and economic affairs, believes that a balance of nationalism and decentralization can help rejuvenate the Burmese economy. Furnivall, who wrote extensively on communism, socialism and colonialism in Burma, says that capitalism had led to economic stability but retarded the process of human welfare. Furnivall predicts the future disintegration and assimilation of Burma with China.
