A Serbian enclave in Yorkshire

Article Abstract:

There has been a Serb community in the Yorkshire town of Halifax for several decades, with the first Serbs being monarchist refugees from Tito's revolution. Until the outbreak of war in former Yugoslavia, they attracted little attention, but they now find themselves the subject of considerable interest. Most of them worship at the Serbian Orthodox Church, but are keen to emphasise that they are not fanatical, as Serbs have been portrayed recently. They are very alarmed by the way in which Serb actions have been described in the western media.

The Faustian pact of celebrity

Article Abstract:

Most ordinary people now regard celebrities as merely a commodity which can be used and then cast aside. For this reason, they show no sympathy when celebrities go through difficulties. Celebrities are able to exploit the mass media, but in return must give up any claim on the humanity of the general public. It seems that celebrities have now become a mechanism for the release of emotions which would otherwise be unacceptable.
