A day out like you mother used to make

Article Abstract:

Southwold, Suffolk is becoming one of the most popular seaside resorts in the UK. It was once a fishing village and is the nearest port to Amsterdam. It has a population of 1,700. Tourist resentment particularly from people who have retired there is high. Southwold offers no tourist attractions such as amusement arcades and seaside cafes and cannot cope with high numbers of tourists. The parish council refused the European blue flag clean beach award to prevent more visitors.

Angry words that ignited the tinder-box

Article Abstract:

A demonstration outside the police station in the Brixton area of London, England, in protest at the death in police custody of Wayne Douglas, a 25-year-old black man, sparked off violent rioting. A post-mortem indicates that he died as a result of a heart condition, but rioters were determined to take revenge against the police. Some 50 shops were looted, 22 people were arrested and 12 people were injured.

Like it or loathe it, the return of the foxhunt was a cause for some celebration yesterday

Article Abstract:

Fox hunting has begun again in all parts of the UK except those which were most badly affected by the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. The suspension of fox hunting in Feb 2001 caused great financial problems for rural areas, as well as severing social links.
