'A defining moment of American history'

Article Abstract:

Marlin Fitzwater, the White House spokesman, announced on May 1 1992 that 4,000 soldiers from the 7th Infantry Division and 1,000 extra police would be sent to the 2,000 square-mile riot centre of Los Angeles. Black leaders, including Benjamin Hooks, leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People gave priority to ending the violence but insisted on correction of the verdict in the Rodney King case. They told President Bush a commission on race relations was essential. The political parties have neglected racial and inner city problems because they realise their votes come from 70% of middle-class suburban Americans.

A uniquely American way of death

Article Abstract:

There are now 3, 015 people awaiting execution on Death Row in the US, compared with less than 300 in 1974. There could be a record number of executions in 1995, and there is growing support for the death penalty among ordinary Americans. However, many of the people who are on Death Row are very unlikely to ever be executed, as there are many appeal procedures which can delay a final decision for many years.
