The new voice of America

Article Abstract:

Clarence Thomas was at one time the only black Justice in the US Supreme Court, but lost this position following allegations against him of sexual harassment. He is now fighting against the government's affirmative action programme, even though he owes his rise to a leading position in the legal system partly to this programme. He believes that there should be a move towards equality of opportunity, with blacks being guaranteed an equal education with whites, rather than having exceptions made for them.

The family that plays to win

Article Abstract:

Former US President George Bush did not perform particularly impressively, but it appears that his family is establishing a strong presence on the political scene. His son George W. Bush is governor of Texas, while another son, Jeb Bush, has gained the governorship of Florida. It also appears likely that George W. Bush will run for the presidency in 2000. He and his brother have been particularly influenced by their mother, Barbara Bush, who appears caring and gentle but is in fact very determined.
