The acceptable face of racism

Article Abstract:

The arrival of ethnic Albanian refugees from Kosovo, Yugoslavia, should prompt the UK to reassess its attitudes towards asylum-seekers. In particular, it must be considered whether negative attitudes towards asylum-seekers fostered by government policies are in fact a new form of racism. People have reluctantly come to accept that there is such a thing as a black Briton, and their racism is thus beginning to target asylum-seekers. There is a preference for economic migrants to remain in their own country, where they can be more easily exploited.

The father of popular culture

Article Abstract:

Filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock, whose centenary falls in Aug 1999, is now widely seen as one of the greatest filmmakers in cinema history. Opinions about his work have changed significantly over time, but a few things about him remain strangely unchanged. These include the view that his films reflect his darkest desires and the allegation that he was a voyeur. In fact, Hitchcock himself was a visionary, even though he made his audiences into voyeurs. His greatest achievement was the ability to appeal to people on every level.

What's so great about trial by jury?

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning UK Home Secretary Jack Straw's wish to restrict trial by jury are discussed. It appears that trial by jury is most valued by judges in cases in which a not-guilty verdict is almost a foregone conclusion.
