The mall that ate Manchester

Article Abstract:

An annual turnover of GB 13bn is expected to be generated by the shops and leisure facilities in the new Greater Manchester-based Trafford out-of-town shopping centre, which is due to open on September 10. It will have cinemas and sports facilities among its three miles of shops and it will be within 45 minutes driving distance for 5.5 million people. However, concerns about major road traffic congestion near the site has been expressed by the AA, who have warning other road users to avoid it. Plans to link the site to Manchester's tram network have not so far reached fruition. The main concern about the mall though relates to small shop owners nearby, some of whom expect to suffer as much as a 27% fall in business. In reaction to this a GB 1.5mn promotional budget has been put together by a grouping of small retailer from 27 nearby towns who will use this to try and compete with the new mall.
