A long road to justice

Article Abstract:

The legal battle by a former bus driver to win back the surplus taken from the pension fund of the National Bus Co when it was privatized in the 1980s has highlighted the issue of ownership of pension fund surpluses. Each pension fund has its own rules about what happens to surpluses. In the case of National Bus Co, the pension fund trustees change the rules without informing anybody, allowing the fund to gain a surplus of 168 million pounds sterling when the government sold the company.

The spoils of war: the cat, the house, and now the pension

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for divorcing couples to clash over pension funds. Indeed, for some couples the pension may be their most valuable asset. Courts are able to set aside a proportion of a spouse's pension, but judges often choose instead to compensate using other assets to balance out loss of pension rights. Many divorcing couples are now seeking specialized financial assistance as they seek to make pension arrangements, as this can be a very complex issue.

Breaking cover: the hidden details of pensions are flushed into the open

Article Abstract:

It is worth comparing the performance of pension funds before making a decision about where to invest, even though past performance does not necessarily give an indication about future strength. It is often not advisable to opt for the most strongly performing funds, as they could be hit by a cyclical decline. It is also important to consider charges, as these could reduce the value of the pension fund by around a fifth.
