A naive fish in very dangerous waters

Article Abstract:

The BBC has decided to support the bid submitted by a consortium of Rupert Murdoch, Carlton and Granada for the digital terrestrial television licence to be awarded shortly by the UK Independent Television Commission. This seems a very misguided approach, given that Murdoch, through his various business interests, already controls 90% of all paid-for viewing and more than 40% of national newspaper readership. The Independent Television Commission should seriously consider the competing bid from Digital Television Network.

A dangerous talent, as seen on TV

Article Abstract:

Janet Street-Porter, who has recently left Mirror Group after clashing with managers about the future of Live TV, has always attracted considerable controversy. She is admired for her strong views and dynamic approach, but has also been criticised for making misguided decisions and failing to take account of office politics. She is now unlikely to ever reach a top position at a leading broadcasting institution, but will still have a strong influence in programme making.

Frightened men, beware! Women are set to fight

Article Abstract:

Women are barred from taking up many positions in the British Army at present. However, some of these could become open to women under new recommendations bring drawn up by the Army Board. Women will still not become involved in direct conflict, but will be allowed to undertake front line duties. The Army Board believes that British society is not yet ready to accept a combative role for women in the army.
