A pot of tea between the Tube's Ann Burfutt and her adversaries would be a frosty affair indeed

Article Abstract:

There is conflict between the representatives of the rail unions, Aslef and RMT, and the human resources director of London Underground, Ann Burfoot. There will be a strike on July 25 1996 and possibly another on July 29 1996, with strikes on six other days if agreement cannot be reached. Jimmy Knapp, the affable general secretary of the RMT, cannot reach any understanding on any issue with Burfoot. There are also political problems, with six members of the RMT general grades executive belonging to the Socialist Labour Party, an ultra-left party wing led by Arthur Scargill.

Vicar loses fight to keep his flock

Article Abstract:

The Privy Council has ruled against Rev Ashley Cheesman, whose parish was reduced to only 300 people by Right Rev Thomas Butler, now Bishop of Southwark. This was apparently the result of claims by some parishioners that Cheesman was preaching in an unconventional, evangelical way. The Privy Council has upheld Butler's decision, which will significantly reduce Cheesman's earnings. The Manufacturing Science Finance union believes that the outcome of this case means that the feudal system imposed on the clergy has been formally supported.
