A quiet word with the director

Article Abstract:

Director of the National Theatre Richard Eyre, 50 on Mar 28, 1993, is a diffident, quietly-spoken man. He ran the Nottingham Playhouse and BBC Play For Today unit before becoming associate director of the National Theatre under Peter Hall. He felt it was his destiny to become director. He wrote 'Utopia and Other Places,' which describes his upper middle-class family background with quotes from his grandfather's account of accompanying Scott on Polar expedition. The National Theatre budgets for 75% capacity to prevent financial crisis.

All set for a scene change

Article Abstract:

New National Theatre Director Trevor Nunn will ensure that change takes place in an evolutionary way, and does not intend to make changes where they are not really necessary. He will not allow administrative tasks to divert his attention from directing, and plans a considerable number of new productions. His projects include directing a new Christopher Hampton adaptation of Ibsen's 'An Enemy of the People,' and staging a Tennessee Williams play which has never been seen before.

Waiting for a gust of wind

Article Abstract:

Theatre is an unusual medium, relying on a very tenuous link between the actors and the audience, according to Richard Eyre, artistic director of the National Theatre. For this reason, it is impossible to predict the future of theatre, and new talent can emerge unexpectedly. Unlimited funding will not ensure that a constant supply of new talent is maintained, or buy the loyalty of actors and directors, who regularly seek new challenges.
