A real change of art

Article Abstract:

Artists submit work to galleries in South Africa under fictitious black names as they believe they are biased towards ethnic work. The South African National Gallery in Cape Town acknowledges multi-cultural society with signs in Xhosa, Afrikaans and English, and an exhibition entitled 'Affinities' to demonstrate the relationship between African and European art. Whites arranged two exhibitions in the 1980s, 'Tributaries' and 'Neglected Tradition' at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. There was one black artist in 90 in the 1985 Cape Town Triennial but 22 out of 137 in 1991.

Rio and the real world

Article Abstract:

The Earth Summit can be said to be successful in that no expensive, speedy action has been settled on for preserving biodiversity and reducing global warming but the money saved could be used to improve life in the Third World. Safe drinking water and adequate sanitation are needed to reduce disease and poverty and over-population should be addressed. World-wide local problems such as river pollution, soil erosion and waste disposal also need attention.

Gloves off, this is 'real people' TV

Article Abstract:

Central Weekend is an outrageous television discussion programme where members of the public with opposing views are encouraged to argue with each other. The live current affairs show is intended to entertain rather than to inform. The production team of 15 is headed by Doug Carnegie. The programme's unpredictability is reminiscent of early television. The confrontational style is typical of American tabloid television.
