AEA joint venture gets 7m state aid

Article Abstract:

AEA Technology is collaborating with Japan's Mitsubishi on a GB 12mn facility to be constructed in Thurso which will make sophisticated lithium-ion batteries, it emerged on 4 June 1998. AEA will provide GB 2mn worth of investment, with the Highlands & Islands Enterprise network to provide GB 3.3mn and the UK government GB 7mn. The commercial lithium-ion battery sector is valued at GB 860mn, with products used in camcorders, laptop computers and mobile phones. It is projected that over the coming three years, the market for customised versions of these battery types may reach GB 150mn. The facility will create 130 jobs and the so-called intelligent rechargeable batteries will be employed in the medical, space and defence sectors. AEA will own 55% of the AGM Batteries venture, which also involves the Japan Storage Battery Company.

UK/US: BT & CROWN CASTLE IN JOINT VENTURE

Article Abstract:

British Telecom (BT) and the US-based company Crown Castle are to launch a joint venture to develop an infrastructure for third generation (3G) mobile networks. Under the new arrangement the companies will use the roof space of BT's 4,000 local exchanges to provide transmission services for the five mobile telephone groups which successfully acquired universal mobile telecoms services (UMTS) licences beginning in 2003. In financial terms the deal will involve Crown Castle paying development fees worth GB[pound] 150mn over two years to BT's wholesale arm. In addition it will also invest GB[pound] 75mn to build the structures at 1,500 BT exchanges initially.

UK/CHINA: P&O IN JOINT VENTURE WITH QPA

P&O Ports and Qingdao Port Authority (QPA) are investing GB[pound] 110mn in a venture which will concentrate on the development of a new container terminal at Qingdao, situated on the north Chinese coast. QPA will own 51% of the company and P&O will own the remaining 49%.
