An industry in crisis? Not quite

Article Abstract:

Classical music labels claim to be increasing their marketing activities to meet growing consumer demand, even though the level of new releases appears to be declining. Deutsche Grammophon plans to increase its promotional activities to expand sales of classical records, with the company rushing out releases to coincide with contemporary events. Classical record label Harmonia Mundi established its own retail outlets in Spain and France to satisfy consumer demand. Pianist Joanna MacGregor has become a record producer to meet public demand for classical music, with MacGregor complaining that the record labels are poor marketeers.
