An unnatural harvest

Article Abstract:

Genetically modified plants have the potential to play a significant role in preventing and curing disease. Biotechnology companies are already growing drugs in transgenic plants such as maize, and believe that this will prove the best approach in the future. Plant vaccines against diseases such as hepatitis can be eaten, rather than injected, and do not have to be kept refrigerated, which would make them much more suitable for use in developing countries. Biotechnology companies are looking in particular at the tobacco plant, and research in California is investigating how this plant could grow antibodies to act as a contraceptive.
