And for my next trick

Article Abstract:

There is considerable scope for improvement at the interface between the computer and the user, according to software developer Kai Krause. He has become well know for the small, specialised packages offered by his company, MetaTools. These programs are of extremely high quality and have very unconventional features. He has indicated that he is now looking to develop a computer interface, although he has no desire to write an operating system.

If you can't complete, you can't compete

Article Abstract:

A PhD has traditionally been seen as one of the highest possible academic qualifications, indicating that the person awarded the PhD is one of the best in that particular subject. However, students are now coming under growing pressure from research councils, which provide funding for most PhD work, to complete their theses as quickly as possible. This partly reflects the fact that a PhD is now seen only as a basis for further research.

Who supervises the supervisors?

Article Abstract:

A doctoral student submitting a thesis will usually have to make some changes to it before the PhD is awarded. The thesis is read by an internal and external examiner, and the marking process is very subjective. This has prompted the National Postgraduate Committee to draw up draft guidelines which are aimed at making the process more consistent and establishing standard procedures for handling research degree appeals.
