Anglophile in search of Scottish separation

Article Abstract:

Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish National Party, hopes to be able to negotiate with the new government after the election on April 9, regarding a referendum to the Scottish people on independence for Scotland. In January 1992 a Scotsman newspaper poll showed there was 50% support for independence but this is now known to have fallen back to around 35%. He thinks Scotland, with its strengths and weaknesses, could do well economically. England, he says, is spoiling things by being dogmatic about Europe.

'The Sun' says: we're a tartan tabloid

Article Abstract:

Scottish editions of popular British newspapers, 'The Sun' and the 'Daily Record' have been calling for independence or devolution for Scotland. The newspapers have denied that these views are simply a strategy to increase sales. Scottish independence is always an issue during the run up to UK general elections. Another newspaper, 'The Sunday Times Scotland' wrote a leader condemning these exhortations to independence, 'The Scotsman 'commented in more moderate terms and 'The Herald' favoured devolution.

A police inquiry will be made into the death of Frederick West, who was charged with 12 murders, at Winson Green Prison. It is likely that he committed suicide, and investigations will focus on how he managed to do this in a high-security prison. His arrest led to one of the largest police operations ever undertaken in the UK, and his death has been welcomed by the relatives of some of his victims.
