Secret of the 'Asia tigers' lures UK leaders

Article Abstract:

UK foreign secretary Malcolm Rifkind's visit to Hong Kong and China is one of a number being made at present by senior UK politicians to Asian countries. The focus of his visit will be preparations for handing over Hong Kong to Chinese rule in 1997. He is keen to consolidate relations with China, rather than to introduce any sense of putting China under pressure. Labour party leader Tony Blair is to visit Tokyo and Singapore, where he will emphasise that Asian economic success is strongly supported by investment in 'human capital.'

Spinning into control

Article Abstract:

Alastair Campbell, press secretary to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, is extremely influential. He constantly prompts Blair, rather than merely transmitting Blair's views to journalists, and was a key player in establishing the New Labour project. He is much closer to Blair than most government ministers, and makes his views very clear to ministers. He clearly greatly enjoys the unique power of his position.
