Arcadia comes to the Big Smoke, to tell its well-worn tale of woe

Article Abstract:

It is common for those who live in the countryside in the UK to portray the city as a place of crime and immorality which is trying to reach out to pollute the countryside and stifle its healthy, traditional way of life. In fact, this view is misguided. The countryside is no longer natural at all, and country pursuits are no more natural than those that take place in the city. Nowadays, people can generally choose whether to live in the city or the countryside, and there is therefore no real gap between the two ways of life.

This phoney story of a bloodless man emerging from the shadows

Article Abstract:

The unofficial biography of former UK Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson by Paul Routledge portrays Mandelson as calculating and manipulating. It magnifies his faults and reduces his achievements. The book seems obsessed with conspiracy and with why Mandelson has not made a clear statement about whether he is gay. Mandelson is a significant modern political figure, whether he is liked or not, and for this reason should not be portrayed in this way.
