As big companies get bigger, consumers should think small

Article Abstract:

There is a strong trend towards concentration in many industries as global brands become more important, the costs resulting from government regulation rise, investment funds seek to place assets in large units and commercial risks increase. However, there are also powerful forces against concentration, including the need for greater specialization of function, the fact that many services cannot be traded across national borders and growing consumer demand for exclusivity in goods and services. Concentration can be fought by using purchasing power to favour smaller companies.

Why Japan should not be taking the US advice

Article Abstract:

The US is misguided in encouraging Japan to raise spending and reduce taxes. This approach would increase Japan's debt burden, and could also push up interest rates, which is exactly the opposite of what Japan requires. It would be much better for Japan to be encouraged to monetize its debt to try to stimulate a small amount of inflation and thus cut the real debt burden. It seems unlikely that the new Japanese cabinet will create a climate in which radicalism can flourish.
