Ashdown's next mission: meet the people and listen

Article Abstract:

Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown plans a six month tour of Great Britain from Nov 1992 aiming for a realignment with ordinary people. He expects established government procedures to be questioned because of the new eastern European democracies. Some problems may be solved by methods not previously considered and he foresees Liberal Democrat style local government with referenda. The party is attempting to strengthen the public's knowledge of the issues it represents. Tax and welfare proposals are at the core of the policy.

A new ruling from the Lord Chief Justice: let's talk about dope

Article Abstract:

Lord Bingham, the UK's Lord Chief Justice, has given an important boost to the campaign for soft drugs to be decriminalized by stating that there should be an open debate on decriminalizing the use of cannabis. This is the first time that a senior member of the UK's legal system has publicly expressed a view on this issue. The UK government has recently rejected the possibility of any moves towards the decriminalization of cannabis.

Doctors dished them out like sweets until, like opium, they got the masses hooked

Article Abstract:

Benzodiazepines remain the most widely misused prescription drugs in the UK, even though doctors are now aware that these drugs can be extremely addictive. Victims of addiction to these drugs are now beginning to fight back, and some are taking legal action. Most of the litigants are unable to work, and some suffer from agoraphobia. They report that they became addicted very quickly.
