At home on Planet Peter

Article Abstract:

It is important to focus on music that is vibrant and alive, according to Real World Records founder Peter Gabriel. He wishes to ensure that the label avoids being worthy and academic. He rejects accusations that the label is commercializing a range of musical cultures from around the world, arguing that those who take from other cultures should give something back by promoting the artists. He regards Real World Records as a platform through which artists can reach a wider audience.

Taj Mahal meets Central Park

Article Abstract:

All the stringed instruments in use in the US have been influenced by the string culture of West Africa, according to blues singer and multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal. The Kulanjan project seeks to link his American blues sound with traditional West African rhythms, thus giving an insight into the former's roots. He does not feel that there are close parallels between Kulanjan and 'Talking Timbuktu,' the 1994 album by Ry Cooder and Malian guitarist Ali Farke Toure.
