Gifts and bribes: the purchasing agent

Article Abstract:

Purchasing agents are 'boundary spanners' who operate under great pressure from several sources both within and outside their own organizations. There is no real consensus among purchasing personnel about what constitutes ethical practice in a buyer-seller relationship, although comprehensive studies such as a US national survey by the the National Association of Purchasing Managers did find agreement on some specific practices. Three approaches for minimizing unethical purchasing practices are: (1) having written procedures and policies that outline ethical behavior, (2) auditing purchasing practices regularly, and (3) subscribing to a code of behavior and ethics from appropriate professional groups.

Avoiding the twin peaks

Article Abstract:

Selective abortion is the most common way of reducing a multiple pregnancy if the parents feel that they cannot cope with more than one baby. However, a better approach for people who do not wish to consider abortion is for the woman to have a scan taken each month after ovulation to see how many eggs have been produced. If there is only one egg present, then it is safe to try to conceive. If there is more than one egg present, then contraception must be used until the following month. This method works only for non-identical twins, but these account for two-thirds of twins born in the UK.
