Westpac reflects a sick industry

Article Abstract:

The Australian banking industry has been in upheaval in the 1990's. Westpac Banking Corporation lost 714 million pounds sterling and the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) lost A$580 million in 1991/2. Bad management, poor loan judgement and the recession caused the crisis. Westpac, Australia's first bank, was founded as the Bank of New South Wales in 1817. Kerry Packer became its second-largest share-holder and was invited to join the board but resigned within a week.

Coastal pollution makes Australian oyster-lovers sick

Article Abstract:

Oysters from Wallis Lake, which produces around half the oysters in New South Wales, Australia, are suspected to be the source of a severe outbreak of hepatitis A. The disease has infected more than 400 people in all Australian states except Tasmania, with around two-thirds of the victims having eaten oysters recently. This has had a severe impact on the Australian oyster industry, with large numbers of Wallis Lake oysters having been removed from the shops.
