Balance? Look, this is Northern Ireland

Article Abstract:

Ulster TV and the BBC are facing significant challenges as they seek to ensure fair coverage of the referendum on the Northern Irish peace agreement. In particular, the Yes and No campaigns are made up of a very diverse range of parties which refuse even to share a television or radio studio with others sharing their views. The Democratic Unionist Party, which belongs to the No campaign, has informed broadcasters that it will be watching closely to ensure that their coverage is balanced. However, the Ulster Unionists believe that the Democratic Unionist Party should not receive equal airtime with the Yes campaigners.

Switched on - but Sky has its limits

Article Abstract:

Sky News, founded in 1989, has proved very useful as a political and public relations operation for News International. However, it has failed to attract large audiences, reaching just over 1 million people a week on cable, even though its reporting is clearly competent and there are few gimmicks. Its main strength has been in domestic, human interest stories. As long as News International is prepared to continue to fund Sky News, there is no reason why it should not continue broadcasting for many years to come.
