Oil at four-month high as Iraq turns off taps

How to cope with the cheapest energy ever - make it expensive

Article Abstract:

The price of oil is set to fall to and remain at very low levels for the foreseeable future. Cheap energy is a key element in raising living standards, but also has significant negative repercussions. When energy is cheap, car manufacturers have no incentive to design fuel-efficient cars, and architects have no incentive to design energy-efficient buildings. It is now time to consider applying the market mechanism to energy through taxation. Energy should be taxed a lot more, and in some cases this may require international cooperation.

Battle of oil giants tests French commitment to open competition

Article Abstract:

French oil concern Elf Aquitaine has made itself vulnerable to takeover bids from foreign competitors following its decision to reject a hostile bid from TotalFina. The merger of Elf Aquitaine and TotalFina would create the fourth-largest oil group in the world. The combined workforce of 142,000 would be reduced by 4,000, but compulsory redundancies would not be necessary. Experts believe that any takeover of Elf Acquitaine will take place at a higher price than the one being offered by TotalFina.
