Best drunk when fresh

Article Abstract:

Local breweries offer really fresh beer and varied flavours. The aroma of freshly-brewed beer is appetising in the same way as that of freshly-baked bread. In Bavaria and the rest of Bohemia there is a brewery in every village. Pubs and shops should rotate their stocks to ensure freshness. The biggest American brewer, Budweiser, requires a shelf-life of only three months. British supermarkets require beers to keep for nine months, but they will lose their flavour. Consumers should be given the date of bottling and information about ingredients.

Tested by pigeons, drunk by the landlord

Article Abstract:

The Timothy Taylor brewery in Keighley, Yorkshire, England, has won about 60 prizes between the 1920s and 1990s. Allan Hey, head brewer, believes in using barley sown in spring, particularly Golden Promise, and adds three varieties of hops, Fuggles, Goldings and Styrian Goldings from Slovenia. The Campaign for Real Ale runs the Champion Beer of Britain competition judged by brewers. Timothy Taylor's Landlord Ale, which was brewed to suit miners' thirsts, a robust, malty bitter, is likely to win the prize.

From a Prodigal Son to a Black Sheep

Article Abstract:

Paul Theakston set up his own brewery, the Black Sheep Brewery, to remain in his home town of Masham, Yorkshire, England. The town, the home of the Theakston brewery where Old Peculier is made, has a Peculier Court of 24 men. The Black Sheep beer is more malty and less yeasty than Theakston's. Theakston's could not cope with demand when the Campaign for Real Ale became popular and Matthew Brown acquired the company. Scottish and Newcastle acquired the brewery in 1988.
