Better a dalliance than an all-out alliance

Article Abstract:

The Labour party and the Liberal Democrats appear to be moving closer together on many issues, but neither side is prepared to enter any sort of formal alliance. However, many of their supporters now see them as parts of the same wide anti-Conservative movement, and believe that they should agree an electoral pact before the next general election, then cooperate in government. Other observers believe that they should remain separate in the interests of political diversity.

Do not mistake deals for reforms

Article Abstract:

Many of the UK's leading companies are now seeking to establish closer links with the Labour party as it moves in new directions. They seem to take for granted that the Labour party will win the next general election, and believe that they are therefore making appropriate preparations. This trend is causing additional problems for a Conservative party which is already in a very difficult situation.

An olive branch or a deadly embrace?

Article Abstract:

The response from the Liberal Democrats to Labour leader Tony Blair's offer of closer cooperation has been mixed. Some agree with Tony Blair that the two parties have much in common, while others remain suspicious of Labour's motives. While Tony Blair's real reasons for this approach still remain unclear, it is widely agreed that it was a very clever political move.
