Big sounds for the small screen

Television broadcasters in the UK have traditionally given very little attention to jazz music. Even when jazz music has been broadcast, these programmes have sometimes been of very poor quality. This is possibly because compromises have inevitably had to be made to persuade broadcasters to consider jazz music at all. However, Channel 4's 'Jazz Heroes' series is very effective, given that it has a limited budget. It features retrospective commentary from contemporary musicians and archive footage, giving a valuable insight into the lives of leading jazz musicians.

A little bit tricksy

Musician Finley Quaye believes that he has been influenced by prominent figures from a number of different musical forms as he has always lacked a father figure in his own life. He feels that music should educate, but also wants to avoid being too political. His first single, 'Sunday Shining,' certainly has clear reggae overtones, with this influence coming from John Zorn's 'Black Hole Dub.' He has recently signed a significant deal with Epic Records.

Music is much more individual than football, according to singer-songwriter Nicolai Dunger, who gave up a promising career as a footballer in order to devote himself to music. He indicates that his greatest influences are Kate Bush and Robert Wyatt.
