Blair braced for trouble in fall-out over poll

Article Abstract:

The leadership of the United Kingdom Labor party has been criticised for fighting a by-election with a candidate supporting the policies of the prime minister. The leadership chose Andrew Slaughter, instead of a local man, David Williams, who had previously stood for the seat, and the seat was retained by the Conservative party with an increased majority. This could signal the end of voters' honeymoon support for the prime minister, Tony Blair. Meanwhile, there has been criticism of the government exerting political influence in the civil service with the departure of three press officers.

Peers are told: time to say goodbye

Article Abstract:

A Royal Commission is to be held on reform of the UK House of Lords. Its recommendations are likely to include the removal of hereditary peers, possibly replacing them with an elected upper chamber under the patronage of United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair. Conservative peers are opposing House of Lords reform, and there are indications that some Labour peers will support their efforts. The Royal Commission will also consider wider issues, including the impact of devolution within the UK.

Twelve months later he's still man of the moment

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has generally been extremely successful during his first year in office. He has shown that he can handle journalists very well, and has gained the respect of many people who have worked at the top of British politics for many years. Even his strongest critics have a certain degree of admiration for him, and most people find it hard to fault him. More information about his long-term approach will emerge when he undertakes his next Cabinet reshuffle.
