Britain is hell for refugees

Article Abstract:

Detention has become a key element of the UK government's policy on asylum seekers. Indeed, around 800 asylum seekers are held in detention centres or prisons at any one time. Detention is used in a heartless, arbitrary way, with those detained being given no information about why they were selected for detention or when they can expect to be released. Conditions inside detention centres can inflict further damage on traumatized asylum seekers.

There are limits to our sympathy

Article Abstract:

There has been a very sympathetic reaction in the UK to the plight of those who were killed by the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. In contrast, the UK government has taken a very tough line against people who seek to enter the country illegally after escaping brutal regimes. In particular, more sympathy should be shown towards people who have fled Afghanistan.

Disaster that lives in this triumph

Article Abstract:

The war in Afghanistan can be seen as both a triumph and a disaster. Military strategy has been very successful, with minimal direct involvement of manpower required. However, this conflict has been a humanitarian disaster, with many people being forced to become refugees. The US must show long-term commitment to peace in Afghanistan.
