A new recruit for Mr Redwood

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative Paymaster General, David Heathcoat-Amory, resigned on July 22 1996, to enable him to join the Euro-sceptic division of the Conservative Party headed by John Redwood, and campaign against European Monetary Union. Heathcoat-Amory has informed the Prime Minister, John Major, that he feels that the government's stance towards Europe is not effective. The resignation will help the aspirations of Redwood to the Conservative Party leadership and fuel the stance of Conservatives who oppose a single currency.

A populist rollercoaster that's hijacking the right

Article Abstract:

Those with right-wing views seem to be dominating the agenda of the UK Conservative party. This party is now characterized by hostility to the European Union and a determination not to participate in the European single currency. Furthermore, a tougher stance is being adopted against asylum-seekers and drug dealers. The Conservatives should be aware that, once populist policies such as rejecting asylum-seekers have been adopted, it is very difficult to drop them again.
