Brooklynites rue day the Big Apple took a bite

Article Abstract:

New York City consisted only of Manhattan and part of the Bronx before it absorbed Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn on Jan 1, 1898. This move increased the population of New York City from 2 million to 3.4 million and boosted its land area from 44 sq miles to 300 sq miles. Special events are to be held in the city throughout 1998 to mark the centenary of the consolidation. However, there are mixed views on this subject in Brooklyn, which has benefited in some ways from its associations with New York City but where residents remain much poorer than those of New York City itself.

Beleaguered airlines emerge from $13bn hell in the heavens

Article Abstract:

The US airline industry made losses of $13 billion in the period 1989-1994, and airlines faced very difficult conditions. Some collapsed altogether, while others have faced bankruptcy. There was great pressure to reduce overheads, and this generally caused most problems for employees. However, conditions are now starting to improve. Fares have remained relatively high, traffic rose by 2.4% in 1995 from 1994, and load factors on the 10 largest airlines rose by 0.8% to 67.3%.
