Brussels appoints the big cheeses

Article Abstract:

EC ministers agreed on two certification schemes for food and farm products. One to guarantee the geographical origin and the other to cover the characteristics of particular foods and products, confirming their ingredients and production methods. A symbol will show certification in all member countries and provide legal protection against copies. Some names which have become generic will be allowed to be sold but without protection. The system will need continual updating to keep its effectiveness.

Sir Leon's deal on wheels: Brussels is subtly pressuring Europe's car-makers to change their pricing policies

Article Abstract:

Sir Leon Brittan, EC competition commissioner, requested a two-year study of European car prices to reveal the gaps between markets. EC competition was exempted for ten years as the car industry argued that cars were a special kind of product needing maintenance, not always in the same place. An EC condition is that the difference should not be more than 18%. He proposed that car companies should instruct dealers to supply at normal price and publish quarterly European price list comparisons.

Brussels rings the changes

Article Abstract:

The EC published a consultative paper on telephone networks. American and Japanese telephone services are far superior to those in Europe, with next day installation and lower charges. The EC has forced competition in data transmission and equipment supply, but not in voice telephony. Competition commissioner Sir Leon Brittan prefers free competition only in international calls between member states.
