New beat from Africa's drummer

Article Abstract:

The magazine Drum, founded in 1951 by Jim Bailey, was the first black magazine in Africa and became extremely influential. When it was most popular, in the 1960s and 1970s, it sold around 5 million copies a month. It played a key role in allowing black Africans to express their views, and gave opportunities to a considerable number of black photographers and journalists. Bailey has now moved on to writing books, the most recent of which is 'Sailing to Paradise,' which details his views on history.

Nowt short of an industrial utopia

Article Abstract:

It has been converted in recent years into a thriving business and creative centre, and is once again playing a key role in the local economy.
