Calcutt screws the news

Article Abstract:

In 1991 the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) disallowed invasion of privacy. Sir David Calcutt QC's 1993 report on the PCC says it has failed. The treatment of public figures was not the main intention but during 1991-3 all newspapers covered the stories involving Paddy Ashdown, David Mellor and the Royal Family. Although 38 million read daily papers only 2,067 complaints were received by the PCC in 18 months. Only 9% are about privacy. Libel writs against the News of the World dropped 60% since the PCC began.

The politics of culture requires the artistic touch

Article Abstract:

One of the most interesting aspects of the Cabinet reshuffle being undertaken by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is likely developments at the Dept of Media, Culture and Sport. This department had a negative image when the Labour party came into government, but Chris Smith, who heads the department, has been successful in persuading Blair to guarantee that the arts will retain its existing share of lottery money. It would be unwise for Blair to appoint Peter Mandelson to replace Smith.

'It has been an illuminating episode.' (resignation of David Mellor MP)(includes related articles) (Transcript)

Article Abstract:

Secretary of State for National Heritage David Mellor made a resignation speech during the House of Commons emergency debate on Bosnia. He felt that the revelations in the press were insufficient reasons for a Cabinet minister to resign and assured the Cabinet that no breach of rules nor any impropriety had occurred. He stated that some tabloid newspapers demonstrated irresponsibility in their methods of obtaining information, which included telephone bugging.
