Can Africa beat its great plague?

Article Abstract:

There are 21 million people infected with the Aids virus in Africa. It is a particular cause for concern that 90% of those infected do not realize that they are infected. Progress is being made in Uganda with slowing down the spread of the Aids virus, as the government was quite quick to acknowledge the scale of the problem and take action against it. However, infection rates are rising rapidly in other countries, including Zimbabwe and Botswana. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa account for the 21 highest rates in the world of HIV among adults aged between 15 and 49. It is clear that being open about this problem is the best approach to dealing with it.

Life on Mars - war of the words

Article Abstract:

Critics have been unable to disprove the claim that the ALH84001 meteorite indicates there was primitive life on Mars over 3.6 billion years ago, says American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientist David McKay. The evidence was presented in 1996 to encourage debate and to find verification or disproof, with McKay claiming the resultant discussions have been unable to disprove the original contention. Critics claim various research findings show McKay is misinterpreting the meteorite and the overwhelming concensus is against the belief it provides evidence of life on Mars.

Dug from the sands of time

Article Abstract:

The Tarim Basin mummies, which are up to 4,000 years old and were found in a remote desert region of northwestern China, are forcing historians to reconsider the traditional view that Chinese culture developed in isolation. This is because the mummied faces appear European, rather than Mongoloid. Preliminary results from tissue samples from 11 mummies show that the DNA sequences match sequences of typically European origin. Further research indicates that the mummies are more closely connected with modern continental Europeans than modern-day Chinese.
