Can HIV resist a cure?

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken by molecular biologist Bill Paxton in the US indicates that a mutated gene known as CCR5 may confer a degree of immunity to HIV. This mutation, which appears in around 1% of white Europeans, does not seem to be present in people of African or Japanese origin. Other research has identified a different mutation, present in between 15% and 20% of people from all racial backgrounds. This does not prevent people from being infected with the HIV virus, but seems to have a significant impact in slowing down the development of Aids.

Sky's the limit for Mars research

Article Abstract:

The Mars Global Surveyor will follow the Mars Pathfinder to research the planet, and will take low-resolution photographs but will not land. Futher probes of the planet are also planned, and research on Mars should be helped by the popular success of Pathfinder. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) has emphasised the question of life on Mars, though Pathfinder was not geared to discovering evidence of this. Data from Pathfinder show a similar geology to Earth.

Dolphins at play in LA Bay

Article Abstract:

The Baja California peninsula in Mexico is made up of empty beaches, mountains, desert and cactus forests. The roads in that area are of poor quality, and beyond the town of Ensenada, Mexico, there is little tourist infrastructure. There are very few hotels or motels, and it can be difficult to gain access to the beaches. However, the region has stunning scenery, and it is particularly worth visiting Bahia de Los Angeles.
