Can Italy survive Dini's fall?

Article Abstract:

Italian prime minister Lamberto Dini was elected to unite the country's extremely divided parliament, moving Italy away from the old political order and its many corruption scandals. However, he is now facing a no-confidence vote, and it seems that he may have failed to fulfil expectations. There is now particular concern about the role of the high institutions of the Italian state, which in turn could threaten the future of democracy as a whole.

Illegal migrants reach EU havens via Italy

Article Abstract:

The Italian police have started to take action to catch illegal immigrants who cross the Adriatic Sea in motor boats from countries such as Albania. However, they do not force the immigrants to leave the country immediately, and this gives them the opportunity to escape the authorities and enter France or Germany. Italy's northern neighbours are now expressing increasing concern about the country's inability to stop the flood of immigrants.

Climax of Italy's TV war

Article Abstract:

Italian media magnate Silvio Berlusconi has until fairly recently been a popular public figure, first through his television stations and then as a politician. However, he has now fallen from favour, and a forthcoming referendum could even rob him of his power over broadcasting in Italy. He may be obliged to sell two of his three network channels and abandon a large part of his television advertising activities.
