Can we trust the Chancellor not to repeat his mistakes?

Article Abstract:

It is not possible to know whether the UK will enter into recession in 1999, but Chancellor Gordon Brown should at least acknowledge this possibility, rather than sticking to extremely optimistic growth forecasts. He must recognize that the forecasts he made in his Jul 1998 spending statement were extremely inaccurate, and should explain what he intends to do if the new set of forecasts also proves to be wrong. He would be very misguided to attempt to cut interest rates further.

Why Britons sell out when others keep it in the family

Article Abstract:

Many of the UK's family-owned business enterprises have been sold off over recent years. This contrasts strongly with the situation in continental Europe, where family-owned operations are still common. Some observers feel that the availability of stock market finance encourages the sale of family-owned concerns in the UK. However, recent research indicates that the differences between the UK and continental Europe in this area are more closely linked with cultural attitudes.
