Cement garden

Article Abstract:

It is very important to create the correct foundation for a patio. This should be made of 100mm of hardcore, with sand and shingle on top to create a smooth basis for the paving material. It is vital that the finished level of the patio is at least 150mm below the damp course, or that there is a gap of 75mm between the patio and the house wall. Drains and air bricks must not be covered up, and attention should be given to ensuring that water can drain away from the patio properly.

Superficially sober, but mad underneath

Article Abstract:

Evergreen plants are very adaptable, and can make a valuable addition to gardens of all sizes. Box is a good evergreen for small gardens, and can be clipped attractively. If kept in a pot, it is important to use fertilizer and to water it regularly. Yew is also attractive, but makes coarser topiary shapes than box when used on a small scale. Holly and ivy are both attractive in winter, and ivy need not necessarily be very invasive.

Welcome to the garden party

Article Abstract:

Spring is a particularly interesting time of the year in the garden, when flowers begin to reappear after a long absence. Many gardeners enjoy remembering where plants such as daffodils, early tulips and hyacinths are planted, and are also reminded of any weed problems. Some flowers are performing particularly well in spring 1996, possibly because of the extremely hot weather in summer 1996.
