The accidental director

Article Abstract:

An important theme and good dialogue are not sufficient, according to theatre director Vicky Featherstone. She is drawn to plays with an image at the centre, even though it can be hard to produce these plays properly. Her attachment to imagery means that she is particularly well matched with playwright Sarah Kane. She is currently directing 'Crave,' a new play by Kane, at the 1998 Edinburgh Festival. She hopes that her approach to this play will allow the audience's relationship with the characters to change constantly.

Cast on the wrong side of the tracks

Article Abstract:

Paulette Randall is only 33, but has already become the leading black woman director in the UK. She has been involved with theatre, television and radio, and most recently has undertaken the first UK premiere staging of August Wilson's 'Two Trains Running.' She came from a deprived background, where there was only limited exposure to drama, but became interested as the result of attending a Community Theatre Arts course. She then trained as a director under Max Stafford-Clark at the Royal Court theatre.

Homeless, but not rootless

Article Abstract:

Talawa, the UK's leading black theatre group, has until recently been based at the Jeanetta Cochrane Theatre in Holborn, London, where almost 500,000 pounds sterling was invested in renovation work. However, it has now moved out following differences with the London Institute, which owns the building. It is currently based in Farringdon, and will have to tour its productions for the foreseeable future, according to artistic director Yvonne Brewster.
