Child sickness that bodes ill for the mother

Article Abstract:

In Britain 26,000 women are diagnosed each year as having breast cancer and almost 16,000 die from it, every woman thus having a one in 12 chance of developing the disease. An obscure child's disease, ataxia telangiectasia or A-T, is linked with some women becoming susceptible to developing breast cancer. A-T has only 150 or so sufferers in the UK and requires both parents to supply one of the pair of defective genes to cause it. Carriers are common at around 2% of the population, half the rate of cystic fibrosis carriers. Female carriers have five to seven times the average likelihood of developing breast cancer and this link is being investigated.

Is this what your child sees?

Article Abstract:

Dyslexia, or specific learning difficulty, affects one in 10 people of all backgrounds, with boys more likely to be sufferers than girls. Although awareness of the condition has increased, most local authorities in the United Kingdom do not have the funds to assess and help such children. Dyslexic children need expert help either in a mainstream or special school. Those who receive such help can overcome their condition and attain a high level of education. If they do not, they can become bored and disorderly.

Joe's permission to fail

Article Abstract:

Parents of a child with a learning difficulty such as dyslexia can find that their child's school does not necessarily really understand the nature of the problem. In these circumstances, the child can become frustrated and withdrawn, and may begin to behave inappropriately. The child may be bullied, and may react with physical attacks. Such children can only flourish if they are given positive reinforcement and a true sense that their teachers believe that they can succeed.
