BBC UK TV has joined with Flextech, the largest cable television operator in the US, to launch UK PLAY. This channel is designed to compete with MTV, which has always led the UK music broadcasting sector. It also aims to rival mainstream entertainment channels. One of its key approaches will be to take established shows and extend their remit. Features will include 'Top of the Pops Plus,' which will include material not shown on the ordinary 'Top of the Pops' programme, and a live 'O Zone' named 'The Phone Zone.'

UK: PREMIER LEAGUE MAY OVERSEE PPV BROADCASTS

Article Abstract:

The Premier League could take charge of screening matches on a pay-per-view (PPV) basis following NTL's decision to pull of of a deal, Sunderland Football Club's chief executive, Jon Fickling, claimed on 19 October 2000. Cable operator, NTL, had planned to show 40 matches per season under a three-year deal worth GB[pound] 328mn. There are rumours also that BSkyB, which has a sound relationship with the Premier League, may rescue the PPV agreement.

World's last TV frontier falls to Murdoch

News Corp and AOL Time Warner have gained the rights to broadcast a cable entertainment channel directly to residents of parts of southern Guangdong province, China. This follows lengthy efforts by Rupert Murdoch and AOL Time Warner's Jerry Levin to gain favour with the Chinese authorities.
