City feels killer's legacy of bitterness

Article Abstract:

There are very strong feelings of bitterness and anger in the Tasmanian city of Hobart against Martin Bryant, who massacred 35 visitors to a local tourist attraction and is now receiving treatment at the Royal Hobart Hospital. He has now been formally charged in a court hearing at his bedside. His presence in the hospital has caused great problems for medical staff, who feel that it is their professional duty to treat him but have been the subject of abuse for doing so.

Tidal wave of death may reach 3,000

Article Abstract:

It is now thought that the tidal waves that hit Papua New Guinea could have killed as many as 3,000 people. John Tekwie, provincial governor of the Sepik River district, believes that most of the people who fled into the jungle after the tidal waves hit the north-west coast of Papua New Guinea are now dead. At least seven villages were destroyed, and an international relief effort is being coordinated to help the survivors.

Slaughter in 'valley of the deepest shadow.' (gunman kills tourists in Port Arthur, Tasmania)

Article Abstract:

A lone gunman is currently under siege by armed police in Port Arthur, Tasmania, after having gone on the rampage and killed a considerable number of people at a former penal colony which is now a key tourist attraction. He fired at random with a high-powered rifle, and was clearly intent on killing. The incident has already sparked calls for tighter gun laws in Tasmania, normally a very quiet place.
