Clinton: 'We turned tide of history.' (Democratic party makes gains in mid-term elections)

Article Abstract:

The Democratic party performed much better than had been anticipated in the Nov 1998 mid-term elections. Indeed, for the first time since 1934 the party of an incumbent President increased its representation in the House. The number of Democrats in the House of Representatives has risen by five, while the balance of power in the Senate remains unchanged. Republicans had hoped that scandal surrounding President Bill Clinton's private life would bring them additional votes, but this did not prove to be the case.

US reels as 81 die, 1,800 hurt in huge embassy bombings

Article Abstract:

Bomb attacks at the US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, have killed more than 80 people and injured more than 1,800. Most of the casualties were in Nairobi, where the embassy is in a busy part of the city. US officials have refused to speculate about who could have been responsible for the attacks, but there are unconfirmed reports that the banned Egyptian terrorist group Jihad had threatened US embassies recently.

A carefully planned attack on soft targets

Article Abstract:

It is clear that the bomb attacks on the US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, were carefully coordinated. It is likely that the attacks were motivated by a desire to protest against US policies outside the immediate region. The US has a number of enemies, including an Egyptian group known as Jihad, which has already threatened to retaliate for US assistance in extraditing Islamists to Cairo, Egypt, from Albania.
