Clinton proposes tax credit for long-term care

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton proposes a long-term care program for year 2000. Central to the program is a $1,000 tax credit for Americans needing long-term care or their families. Eligibility for the program requires the establishment of at least three or more limitations in daily living activities or a severe cognitive impairment. It should be made clear, however, that the program is not a reform of Medicare, nor Medicaid, nor any other health-related programs. It also promotes the inclusion of long-term care insurance policies as part of a benefit package in the workplace.

The loveliness of the long-distance footpath

Article Abstract:

The Trans-Pennine Trail is a new UK footpath which covers 1,190 miles from Southport to Hornsea. The project is expected to cost around 20 million pounds sterling in total. Some 1.75 million people are forecast to use the trail each year, including 40,000 foreign tourists, some of it on old railway lines, and 60% along lanes, minor roads, and concessionary paths or rights of way, such as river banks and canal banks. The path is ready for walkers, but not for cyclists. New bridges need building, and there are some gaps in the trail.

How long shall we avoid the immigration issue?

Article Abstract:

The UK's political parties cannot decide to ignore particularly sensitive issues, such as immigration, once a general election has been called. Immigration is an election issue, even though prime minister John Major has tried very hard to dismiss it. The lives of many people in the UK have been changed dramatically by immigration over recent decades, and it is vital that this is discussed publicly. To do so is not to be guilty of racism or opportunism.
