Year 2000 and the Euro

Article Abstract:

The UK faces two important challenges in the new decade: the Year 2000 computer problem and the introduction of the Euro in currency markets. While a good number of experts have warned of chaos resulting from computer system failures in the year 2000, the consensus opinion of observers is that the UK looks likely to survive the end of the 1990s with minimal disruption in its computer sectors. The introduction of the Euro also bothers many business observers, as the government has yet to come up with a decision on the UK's participation in the common European currency initiative.

The launch of the euro

Article Abstract:

The launch of the European Monetary Union on Jan 1, 1999 will have an immense impact on business in the region. The euro will be applied only for financial records, with coins and notes for daily transactions to be introduced in 2002. This is expected to result in transparency in comparison of retail prices while cross-border shopping is likely to surge. The grey market business is also seen to benefit from the monetary union. A study conducted by Cap Gemini highlighted the concerns of retailers and manufacturers, particularly in how customers perceive their service.

Euro Disney? Quelle horreur!

Article Abstract:

Euro Disney opens in the outskirts of Paris on April 12, 1992 and many are opposed to it. A survey of French thinkers revealed a split in opinion. Max Gallo, writer and politician sees it as a defeat for European culture and writer Jean Cau as a horror of cardboard and plastic. Novelist Michel Tournier is not bothered by it, seeing it as a return of the soul of America to its foundations in Europe. Historian Marc Fumaroli sees it as a conspiracy by French officials and does not blame the Americans but the French.
