Close encounters in the music shed

Article Abstract:

The Tanglewood Music Festival, which started in the 1930s as a local orchestral event in the hills east of Boston, MA, was the brainchild of Serge Koussevitzky, a double bass player and conductor from Russia, who married into a wealthy family, set up a music publishing company, and boosted the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It runs from the end of June to the beginning of September, annually, and includes a music centre for young people. British Broadcasting Corporation's Radio 3 broadcasted live concerts over the weekend of July 13 1996.

A place for everything and everything in its place

Article Abstract:

Planning a long way ahead can bring a feeling of being imprisoned, according to violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. This is why she feels that she cannot enter into a long-term relationship with a record company. She has focused on Beethoven in 1998, and has now completed her new Deutsche Grammophon Beethoven violin sonata cycle. She has worked very harmoniously with pianist Lambert Orkis, and attributes this partly to the fact that having children of her own has made her calmer and more patient.

Last of the great sliders

Article Abstract:

Violinist Aaron Rosand is most happy when playing the violin, and is not at all interested in public relations. He has come to be regarded as a 'Romantic Virtuoso,' and is familiar with music which younger players tend to neglect. He has a unique style, derived partly from playing with a gypsy violinist as a young man.
